In this paper, a novel method, consisting of single notched tensile test and standard tensile test, to investigate fracture resistance of very soft biomaterials was presented. Soft biomaterials were considered as viscoelastic materials. The single notched tensile test was used to estimate the fracture work with viscolastic dissipation; and the standard tensile test was used to determine the viscoelastic work between loading and unloading force-displacement curves of standard tensile test. The work difference between single notched tensile test and standard tensile test is defined as the fracture work. Fracture resistance is computed by dividing fracture work by the new created fracture area during single notched tensile test. A polymeric hydrogel material was used as a sample material to evaluate this method. The fracture resistance of this hydrogel material estimated by aforementioned method is approximately 1.7E-05 N-m/mm2.
