I am traveling in Vietnam and Cambodia once again. We had the Director General (DG) of CIAT come visit us in Asia. He was basically the one who got me this job, so I was really happy to finally meet him in person. He is originally from Uruguay so it was also nice to feel the "Latin" as well. (I went dancing Salsa on Thursday and oh, how much I miss Colombia!!)
Meeting the DG made me think a lot about my future again. I wanted to start PhD some time soon so I can learn more about market linkages in the rural community. But what I am doing for my job right now is completely different (economic impact assessment). I enjoy my job and what I do now but I know, as a fact, that I am a very practical person. Impact assessment seems a bit far from the reality or the field and I want to work with people and farmers more than an impact assessment project would let me. But at the same time, the opportunity is perfectly lined up for me to do a PhD for impact assessment.
I have been looking for a way to do PhD in Europe for some time. The reason why I chose Europe is because (apart from wanting to have an experience of living in Europe=P) European universities allow a lot of flexibilities in research and I can focus on research instead of taking theoretical classes. But the DG made a good point; "your brain is like muscle. It needs exercises. Also, doing a PhD in US really trains you in Math and makes you feel confident." It is very very true. Also, he said that I would need a PhD if I wanted to work in the international environment.
Now, once again, the question is, "Do I want to work in the international environment?" I do enjoy my job, in fact, I love it. But I would wish to focus on one region and be more stable. So I'm thinking a lot as always. The funny thing is, I know what I want. I also know where I want to end up in and therefore, where I will end up. Because I have always followed my heart and made my way so I can be always honest with my wishes. But let me think a bit more. And most importantly, let me find the way that lets me do what I want to do.

work work!
Centro International de Agricultura Tropical: where I work every day
staying at the office little bit later: the dawn in the experimental field of rice, sugar cane, tropical fruits, etc
Three days have past since I came to Cali and started working in the CIAT office.
Always settling down takes up lots of energy and that is probably why I am extremely tired at the end of the day.
And my everday working life goes like this:
5:30am -- get up and get ready
6:30am -- catch the bus to CIAT, which is about an hour away from where I live
7:30am -- arrive at the office and start working
12:00pm -- lunch at the CIAT cafeteria. soup, rice, meat or fish, salad, and fruits if you want: delicious typical South American dish!
1:00pm -- coffee/discussion with my boss and his colleagues; very serious but open-minded people
4:30pm -- finish work and catch the bus to go home
5:30pm -- arrive at the hostel; the end of the day
There are some facilities like gym that is open for the people at CIAT but they don't open all day long.
The only method to go back to Cali from CIAT is the bus, which runs only at 4:30pm and 6:30pm from the CIAT office.
So today, I am staying in the office a bit longer to write this update and then, going to explore the gym a little bit to refresh from work.
I love my work and it is very interesting but so as physical activities. (well, moderate ones) And the nice thing about my work at the moment is that at 4:30pm, it is done and I don't have much homework to do at home, unlike school.
A small update about my trip to Asia:
apparently, I am going there in 2 weeks instead of one month. So I will be leaving for Bangkok on the 22nd; wow!
It's obviously not a vacation so that means I have a lot of research to do before I leave. But I got to know this Colombian girl, Martha, today and she is helping me a lot. Plus, she is a very nice person and I am excited that I finally got to know somebody who can really be my friend=)Số lần xem trang : 20547 Nhập ngày : 08-03-2011 Điều chỉnh lần cuối : 27-03-2011 Ý kiến của bạn về bài viết này
